Ute canopies are a great way to add storage space on top of a ute tray. There are many different types of canopies that you can choose from to personalise your ute. Depending on your needs and preferences, here are some ute canopy types you might want to consider.
Single Cab vs Extra Cab vs Double Cab Canopy
Not every ute has the same specifications. Naturally, ute canopies adapt to the differences between the vehicle sizes.
Ute canopies are most commonly 1800mm wide, which fits most standard tray sizes in the market. They are most often between 850mm to 1000mm high and most often have 3 doors. Units designed primarily for touring or offroading will often have only 2 doors, allowing a reinforced rear wall to accommodate spare tyre holders, gerry can holders and ladders.
A single cabin canopy fits a single cabin ute. The tray size on a single cab ute is most commonly 2400mm long and so these are the longest and largest canopies available. Most commonly used in commercial applications.
An extra or space cab canopy likewise fits an extra or space cab ute. The tray size on an extra cab ute is most commonly 2100mm long
A dual cab canopy is the most popular size. Designed to suit an 1800mm long tray which can be fitted to a cab chassis vehicle, or retro fitted as a replacement to the style side or tub pick up.
Permanent fit canopy
Also known as fixed canopies, permanent fit canopies are ideal for off-roading or work purposes are designed to be permanently mounted to existing ute trays.
If you don’t plan on removing your canopy regularly, fixed canopies tend to be preferable than lift-off ones. They rely on the tray floor to provide the support, and are more permanently attached to the ute tray, usually with plates and suitable large size bolts. They can also sometimes be more economical, as they can be fitted with tray decks as head boards and drop sides are not required on the tray.
Lift-off canopy
On the other hand, a lift-off canopy provides more flexibility. You can carry what you need on the canopy and then just as easily remove it from your ute. Lift-off canopies are beloved by people who use the ute tray for multiple purposes.
Lockable canopy
If you’re worried about safety, lockable canopies are the safest around. They have locks that are bolted in place instead of riveted. This allows you to hold more in the canopy with more security.
